Scuba diving, traditionally seen as a recreational activity in India, is now gaining traction as a competitive sport. The Indian coastline, along with pristine diving sites around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep, provides an ideal setting for diving enthusiasts and professionals alike. The 2024 Indian Scuba Diving Championships, held in the waters off Havelock Island, was a milestone event for the sport, attracting international participants and boosting India’s profile in the global diving community.
Rakesh Kumar, one of the event’s stars, secured first place in the deep-sea diving category, reaching a depth of 65 meters. Kumar’s victory, along with several impressive performances by other Indian divers, demonstrates the country’s potential in competitive scuba diving. The event also included underwater photography competitions, treasure hunts, and rescue drills, making it a comprehensive showcase of scuba diving’s diverse disciplines.
The Scuba Diving Association of India (SDAI) has been working to standardize the sport by setting guidelines for safety and training. Scuba diving schools in Goa, Kerala, and the Andaman Islands are providing certification programs and promoting the sport as both a recreational and competitive activity. Additionally, with more young divers coming forward and the increased support from local governments and private stakeholders, scuba diving is poised to grow significantly in India.
