In a spectacular display of strength and determination, Indian weightlifters made history by securing a record-breaking seven medals at the World Weightlifting Championships 2023. The championship, held from September 4 to 17, saw India emerging as one of the top-performing nations.
The star of the show was Mirabai Chanu, who won the gold medal in the women’s 49kg category. Chanu lifted a total of 203kg (88kg in snatch and 115kg in clean & jerk), setting a new championship record and securing her place as one of the world’s leading weightlifters.
Alongside Chanu, Jeremy Lalrinnunga won a silver medal in the men’s 67kg category with a total lift of 312kg (140kg in snatch and 172kg in clean & jerk). Lalrinnunga’s performance was particularly noteworthy as he managed to overcome a knee injury that had plagued his training sessions.
Other medalists included Achinta Sheuli, who secured a bronze in the men’s 73kg category, and Jhilli Dalabehera, who took bronze in the women’s 45kg category. Both athletes delivered impressive performances, contributing to India’s best-ever medal haul at the World Championships.
The Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) lauded the athletes’ performances, emphasizing the importance of their achievements for the sport in India. “Our lifters have shown incredible grit and determination to achieve this historic feat. This record-breaking medal haul is a testament to their hard work and dedication. We are immensely proud of each one of them,” said IWLF President Sahdev Yadav.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the athletes on their outstanding performances. “Heartiest congratulations to our weightlifters for their record-breaking performance at the World Weightlifting Championships. Their achievements are a source of immense pride for the nation. They have shown what true determination and perseverance can achieve,” Modi tweeted.
Mirabai Chanu expressed her gratitude and joy after winning the gold medal. “This is a dream come true for me. Winning gold at the World Championships is a significant milestone in my career. I am grateful to my coaches, support staff, and everyone who has supported me. This medal is for my country,” Chanu said.
